wow so nice!!! What kind of yarn can I use for this pattern?

sunraze7777 said...

was wondering what "work even" means

Hooked! said...

Work even means one single crochet in each single crochet around.

sunraze7777 said...

Thanks. I made the Mario hat and it is so cute !

T. Blauvelt said...

I have tried this pattern twice now and the hat always ends up way huge. Any thought on what I could be doing wrong?

Hooked! said...

I'm not sure...Are you using a size H hook? If you are using a bigger hook, the hat will turn out bigger. If you are using an H and it is way too big, maybe you could try using an F or a G size...otherwise, I'm not sure why the hat is turning out like that ~Laura

Anonymous said...

For row 8, do we 2sc and then sc in the next 6, or do we repeat row 7? Thanks for the pattern, by the way, I love it!

Anna said...

Please clear up my confusion on rows 8-19! Do we do 2 sc in first sc and then x+1 number of 1 sc's? (ie, for row 8, 2 sc in first sc, then 6 sc, for row 9, 2 sc in first sc, then 7 sc)

I'm going to try doing that, and if it gets too hugenormous, I'll frog it and start over :)

Hooked! said...

Sorry about the confusion for rows 8-19. Anna, you are correct in your assumption about contiuing to increase in each of those rows.

Anna said...

Hooray, I was right! It looks awesome so far, too. :) I love the swirl effect!

Anonymous said...

Please can you clarify what to do from rows 8-19!! Even after reading the comments i'm still confused. I just ended up making up my own pattern because I screwed up the hat. The way its written i thought you hd to do *2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next 5 sc* around. for the next 11 rounds.

maris said...

Hi Laura!
I am making the emblem and the letter and it's small compared to the one the photo...so I had to put 2 yarns together and used a bigger hook (7mm) instead of a 5mm for the letter :)
What hook size did u use for the letter?

Anonymous said...

hi! quick question for row 26-31 do i sc2tog and sc in next 15 sc and so on

thank you

Monica said...

@ anon I just made this hat yesterday and you sc2tog then sc in next 15 * around. Then repeat while decreasing. Next row sc2tog then sc next 14 and so on

cescaa said...

super adorable!!!!

lala0720 said...

The top of my hat is turning out pointy any ideas on what i am doing wrong?

Connie said...

Oh heck. This is confusing. I also did rows 8-19 using pattern 2 sc in one then 5 sc in next. I guess this is wrong?? Clarification on pattern would be great as to increase & decrease rows. Too open for interpretation.

Hooked! said...

Apparently I'm not the best pattern-writer, lol. So for rows 8-19, you would start row 8 with the 2 sc in first sc and then one sc in the next six sc. Row 9 would be 2 sc in first sc and then one sc in the next seven sc, etc. until row 19. I hope this made more sense.

I was wondering if there is any way to make this to fit for a 6 month old? Awesome pattern by the way. Thanks for sharing.

Unknown said...

please what is 2tog? I am at that point, and do not seem to know or remember what "tog " is? thank you for any help :)

Hooked! said...

2tog means two stitches together.

Mother of the Brides and Groom! said...

Well dang...I also messed up on the rows 8-19...I wish I had read all the comments before starting!!! I've got a wavy circle over here because I kept going at *2sc, 1sc next 5 stitches*...uuugh.

Anonymous said...

Hi, I love this pattern, what yarn would I use for it though? I'm about to start for my nephews as they're Mario mad!! Thanks :)

Unknown said...

What is the purpose for marking round seven?

Unknown said...

Reading the rest of the comments! LOL I did the exact same thing! I had a big, wavy, floppy, pizza-looking disc because I was increasing every five sc! I thought when it said to mark round seven and then continue in this pattern that it meant I was to continue in the pattern of round #7!!! I had to rip out five very LONG rounds last night and begin round #8 again!

Unknown said...

Anonymous, I am using the Red Heart Cherry with very good results. :-)

Unknown said...

To make an adult size, just use fewer decrease rounds at the end. You can keep trying it on your head until you get the right size.

Mother of the Brides and Groom! said...

Help! Is this worked continuous or slip-stitched at the end of each row? My counts are way off and I cant figure I out!!! :(

Hooked! said...

Hi all! Thanks for all of your comments. I apologize for all of the confusion. Mother of the brides, you need to work continuously, that is why I said to mark the first stutch in row 7. Ut helps you keep track of where your rows begin and how many you have done so far. Good luck! Let me know if there us any more confusion :)

Hi I'm in the middle of making Luigi hat using a size G hook & category 3 or 8ply yarn. Should I do an further crown & side increases as this is for a 7yo boy. Your pattern doesn't state what type of yarn to use. I'm doing 20 rounds at present but may do more, can u let me know how many increases to do on 8ply yarn asap?

Thx: Michelle

For rows 33-35, are those three rows worked in the front loops like row 32 or are they worked into the whole stitch? Thanks

I am feeling rsther dumb, I am at the point of row 32 work even in front loops. Done thst now the next rows 33 through 35 say work even but are they front loops as well, the picture doesnt give me any idea. I don't think i should, but thought i should adk.

~*CAS*~ said...

Do you have a version of this for ADULTS???? My husband is a HUGE Luigi fan & wants a hat, but i'm not the best at adapting patterns yet...

Unknown said...

what size does this make? i want to make one for an adult male.

Jen L said...

Thanks for the pattern. This ended up being big enough to fit me. But I pulled the last few rows out, added an extra decrease row plus 2 sc2tog in the next row and now it fits my 6yr old's big head well enough. If I make another I'll use a G hook.

Thank you for sharing this pattern! I'm not sure if my work is too tight or my yarn was too fine, but this worked up to infants size for me. 6-9mos
I'm going to give it another shot, but its so cute!

Hello, I was wondering what is the head size of the child you made this for?(circumference) I used a H hook and it wouldn't fit more than a 9mths old. My stitches are not tight either, don't know what I did wrong. But thanks for the pattern very cute

Anonymous said...

I made two. One for my 4 yr old, and I had to to one more round on the hat to make the opening smaller. The other one is for my 1 yr old. I went couple more rounds smaller. They look great!!!! Thank you for the patter.

I'm working on this hat right now for a friends little boy and am curious what size this hat is supposed to fit. Thanks

Was wondering how I can adapt this for a one year old. Not sure when to stop increasing and if I should decrease more. I do not have the child to measure as this is a gift being sent out of state. Thanks for any help.

what size is this for? do you happen to have a baby size? Thanks for the free pattern its great :)

Since there are a lot of comments about sizing I just thought I would let you all know that I made the pattern, as is,
with Red Heart Super Saver yarn and it fits my 4.5 yr old (20.5" head) perfectly

Anyone else having a problem with the emblem being a hexagon instead of a circle? I found a fix. If you follow this pattern instead it will be much rounder :D

Row 1: Magic Circle 6 sc
Row 2: 2 sc in each sc around. (12)
Row 3: *2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next sc* around. (18)
Row 4: 1 sc *2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 2 sc* (repeat 5) 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc (24)
Row 5: *2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc* around. (30)
Row 6: 2 sc *2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 4 sc* (repeat 5) 2 sc in next sc, 2 sc (36)
Row 7: *2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next 5 sc* around. (42)
Row 8: 3 sc *2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 6 sc* (repeat 5) 2 sc in next sc, 3 sc (48)
Finish off

Hi,
thank you for this awesome pattern. really the only one out there that looks great.
I made it with a thicker wool and therefore changed the pattern.
I live in Germany and lots of Germans asked me to translate it and post it.
Would you allow me to translate my altered version and post it on my blog. Of course I would include a link to your website and tell everyone that it was your idea, not mine.
Let me know. Would be great.
Have a nice day!

I am new to crochet and would love to make these for my boys as part of their halloween costumes but dont understand the pattern. I get to row 3 and am lost. I dont get how you get 18 and 24 in the 4th row and so on. Much help would be appreciated.

Renee said...

Anonymous New To Crochet...You said you were stuck and couldnt figure out what to do...Ill try to help you...

Row 2: It says 2 sc around. (12 sc)......It is saying for you to do 2 sc in each of the the 6 that are there from row 1, when you get thru youll have 12 sc in that row...

Row 3: It says *2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next sc* around. (18 sc)......It is saying for you to do 2 sc. in the first stitch in the next one its telling you to do 1 sc.(((Notice the * shape that is telling you to repeat everything that is between the two *))) ...2 in one stitch 1 in the next stitch keep repeating it... when that row is done you will have 18 sc in that row...
*
*
Skipping to Row 7
After row 7 is says to...Continue in this pattern to row 19.
What it is telling you is to continue the pattern of increasing till row 19 is all done...
(((What it is say is...Notice row 3-- 2 sc in first sc 1 sc in next sc)))---You Will Always start the row with 2 sc in the first stitch ...what will change is the you will be adding one more sc than the row before...(Row 3) 2 sc then 1 sc in the next...(Row 4) is 2 sc in first then then do 1 sc in the next 2 sc)(Row 5) is 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in the 3 sc...I Hope that helps you and doesnt confuse you anymore GOOD LUCK!!...

hello I have made this hat for my friends little boy who is 4...I wasn't sure that size this pattern was for but I used an h hook and size 4 medium cherry red yarn and at the end It is small enough it wont fit my 18 month old...I finished with 66 sts around and im just not sure...the hat is really cute and probably might fit a baby but im going to have to try it again with a bigger hook the next time or something to make sure that it is big enough. what size did you make this pattern for?

Hi,
I wanted to know how I can edit this pattern for a NB size?

Unknown said...

Worsted weight is fine for tots.

Unknown said...

Yes that’s what you’re supposed to do.😉

Unknown said...

If you don’t do the proper amount of increase stitches(sc 2 in 1 st) it will make it pointy-er.

Unknown said...

To help you keep count of the rows

Unknown said...

Continuous

Unknown said...

The pattern is for toddlers if you use worsted weight yarn.

Unknown said...

No they aren’t

Unknown said...

It will be a hexagon shape until you start the “work even” rounds.

I think a gauge given in the pattern would clear up so much of the size confusion. Any chance someone has the gauge figured out? Even a diameter after so many rounds, while it's a flat discus?
